Make Money With Your Music

Posted Wednesday, December 8, 2010 by momscashblog | 23 Comments so far

Music and the Internet:

Music and the internet has certainly come a long way and it has made “some” musicians very rich and famous.  An unknown kid from Canada named Justin Bieber downloads videos of himself singing on YouTube  and the kid becomes an overnight success.  A band called Atomic Tom  riding on the NYC subway are discovered while singing on the B-Train using   iPhones with apps sounding like drums, guitars, and piano,  they go viral and are  being  interviewed on all the morning network shows. They’re  said to be in talks with Apple and at present time their YouTube videos have over 2 million hits.

There are numerous ways for musicians to make money on the internet,  without spending all of  ones  life savings.   With YouTube and many other on demand sites that are out there and new ones popping up, that’s what the musician can look forward to.  Maybe it’s our 15 minutes of fame or it’s money that will be coming in from a talent of ours… who knows?  I do, because I have listened to Ezekiel Haynes jazz cd “Reflections”.

Meet The Musician:

I know many of you have probably already heard of and follow the blogger Ezekiel, and now jazz musician and entrepreneur.  I had asked Ezekiel if he would mind being part of a post informing everyone how he is “making money on the Internet with his music”? With the help of Ezekiel we will give some sites and software that he used to get to where he is now, selling two cd’s world wide on the internet.

Ezekiel’s love for music started at a very young age and was cognizant of playing endlessly at the piano for hours. “Piano, it’s the thing I express through,  it’s always running through my head.” “I never got the opportunity to take lessons but, every time I  would get in front of a piano I wanted to create. The same with pots and pans or a couple of rubber bands on a box… I wanted to create. Practicing music has never been a chore, it’s always been something I looked forward to doing.”

Nuendo Helps Get Music Recorded:

Ezekiel reveals that he has been using Nuendo for the past 10 years, so he had a good amount of music to work with. Nuendo is a sound mixing, audio production, recording arrangements, editing and surround mixing software.

I had asked Ezekiel what made him want to publish/record his music after 10 years of work.  He had an interesting answer to this question.   “Creating music is easy for me” he says, “but worrying about how everyone will receive it, is another thing. The thing that woke me up a bit was the thought of passing away and my kids or grand kids going through my things, seeing what their dad or grand dad selfishly kept hid. I believe directly or indirectly everything we do in life,  good or bad affects everyone in someway. So, I decided from that day to start releasing every musical idea I had.”

Musicians Online Community:

Indabamusic … indaba comes from the Zulu word meaning to “gather or share ideas”. This was one site that Ezekiel recommended for the independent musician.   Indabamusic was started with a community atmosphere in mind, a musical community of artists helping each other and to make their lives easier in all ways of the musicians life. If you need help with understanding or knowing which direction to take your next step, you need people who are in and have been in the business to guide you on the right path. You get a chance to collaborate with musicians from all around the world.  This quote from Wired best sums up what Indabamusic and the Internet has done  for the world of musicians: “With broadband, social networking apps and web-based audio tools increasingly available and affordable to most people with computers, the world of music is on the verge of big change. That perfect-storm combination of these tools will do for music creation what technology has already done for music consumption: remove barriers of time, space and scarcity”. Indabamusic.com has some real heavy hitter musicians working and donating their time to the cause of helping other musicians. Check this site out!!

Distribution of Your Music:

Tunecore ….. is one of the best places to get your music out to the various digital retail sites. In fact Tunecore has a worldwide distribution site. Ezekiel mentioned that Tunecore.com also offers an affiliate program through CommissionJunction. Tunecore plays an important part in an artists career and in their quest to get their music noticed, as Tunecore gets the music distributed to many of the major companies as in Amazon MP3, Rhapsody, and iTunes. The artist, you the musician receives “100% of your royalties and of course keep all of your rights”.  Tunecore has recently widened their distribution to full length films, TV shows, live concerts and documentaries.  A Holiday CD made by your whole family? Tunecore will get that song out to all of the  digital retailers, you in turn get paid when your music is downloaded or sells.

cdBaby…. is another place to get your music distributed to digital retailers such as:  Rhapsody, iTunes, Amazon MP3 and the usual big hitters.   They are an online distributor for the independent musician. cdBaby gives the definition  of ” [in - de - pen - dent ] (adj.) not having sold ones life, career, and creative work over to a corporation.” cdBaby will sell music that is sent to them, and will help you sell downloads from their sites. This company is run by musicians for musicians. When you send your cd to their “warehouse” each & every piece of music is listened to, in turn cdBaby distributes the musicians music directly to download retailers.  This site is another thumbs up from Ezekiel.

How the Title Comes About:

How does an artist come up with the title for their music? Ezekiel said “the inspiration behind the title was that these songs were from my past, music has a way of sustaining memories and/or emotions. For each song I can reflect back on what I faced or felt during the time of its creation.”  Reflections is a jazz cd,  and the piano that Ezekiel plays for this cd is very soulful, he’s also  a very spiritual person and that comes off  his music. He had also recorded a beautiful  piano piece to help get his own children to bed, the name of that cd is Faith’s Lullaby.  I happened upon that cd when purchasing Reflections on Amazon.  If anyone is looking for a Holiday or that special gift for a mother to be, this would be a great gift.  Just download the tracks that sing to you, using any of the digital retailers that we have mentioned here or check out both.

How To Get CD Covers Designed:

Ezekiel said that for his covers he was introduced to someone  from New York that designed the layout for him. “She asked me a few questions, sent me some samples until we got the final draft. Now I use elance which connects you with top designers from around the world. Most of them (artist) know exactly how a cd layout should look to catch the eye of your customer.”

How To Advertise Your Music:

Advertising now with the internet/world wide web is easier than ever. You can use any of the SocialNetworks that are free for all. I had asked Ezekiel about his advertising program and he mentioned, “jj, I didn’t see any sales but slowly they started coming in. I had to remember that the vast population doesn’t know who I am so it requires that I create some sort of brand for myself. Advertising is very important because even though your projects are on iTunes, Amazon, ect. doesn’t mean the public will see it. However you can drive traffic to the various platforms through direct  linking. I’ve submitted my project to various internet radio sites as well;  Amazon is probably the easiest place to market anything. They even have a service that will create a cd from your sound bytes on demand. I’m now doing off-line advertisement by performing around town and connecting with various radio stations.”

There are a bountiful of ways to advertise or sell yourself/ or your music, especially with the internet.  Get some t-shirts made with your bands name on it or your newly released tracks of your cd’s. Put the dates of all the places you have played at, or ones where  you are scheduled to play.  People love t-shirts and love to wear them when they are displaying a favorite song or artist’s title of their album/cd, I know I have plenty from back in the 60′s and 70′s. With all  of the printing networks on the internet advertising,  get bumper stickers and posters printed,  self- promote yourself.   Remember your words and music are now able to reach the whole world. It’s just another way that you can make money from your passion, art, and talent by using the internet.

Legal & Copyright:

Ezekiel wanted to make sure that everyone remembers to get these legal things done, and if necessary do your research. Remember to copyright your music and set up as a publisher and write with either bmi or ascap. This allows you to get paid royalties when your music is bought or plays on the radio or any place that publicly plays your music.

I hope that this post will help any artist out there that wants to get their music published and then distributed. Also if you happen to have a bunch of songs in you, take to YouTube. One never knows what, who or when you’ll be seen by someone and you get your 15 minutes of fame. I think we all realize that the chances of a musician becoming “rich” with their music is just that “chance”,  we also know as artist that the money isn’t always great but they continue for the “love of what they create.”

FrugalTips, I guess if one has some talent for music or singing, you could have a chance to record, produce, and lets face it put a lot of work into your craft. No one ever said that a musician will be rich overnight, but thanks to some great websites out there and with the steps we’ve given, you can get maybe a song sold on Amazon downloaded and make a few bucks. You have a song in you, go for it! Thanks for stopping by, and commenting.

Hey Deneil, How’s it going? Glad to see you around and reading my post, thanks so much for leaving a comment… really appreciate it. Yes, you have to get that record label started, hey one never knows. I think you might have more luck at singing (if you have it in ya) video it, download it on YouTube and see if you go viral. Really, just think what YouTube has done for so many people… music, crazy pet ads, babies laughing or doing silly things ending up on commercials, some young kid with a beatle haircut and he’s being mentored by Usher. Hey thanks for stopping by. jj

I didn’t know Justin Beiber did that. I know a lot of musicians with potentials. This post is very helpful. I’m gonna tell those musicians that I know to visit and read your post. I am also into music, I made some songs but just like Ezekiel, I kept it hidden. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks SeoCalgary, for stopping by here at mcb appreciate it very much. If you are a musician and have songs that you are sitting on, please think about getting them out to the world. I’m an artist, and I know from experience that artist (of all kinds) should show their work. I’m thinking almost like Ezekiel get them out to the universe before it’s too late. Would love to hear more about your work. Yeah Justin started out by downloading videos on YouTube, and getting tons of hits and I understand that Usher saw the video and is mentoring him. Pretty good huh? Thanks again, come by again and leave a comment. jj

Tej Kohli, Thanks so much for your comment and for stopping by my blog. I must tell you though, You don’t make money by just listening to music. This post was about a fellow blogger friend who is a Jazz Musician who has recorded a cd using certain software, then he had to use all the different sites that we named here just to get his music recorded onto a CD. Then he had to get the CD made and using another site(provided above)he was able to get this CD on Amazon to sell, and is able to be downloaded on the different music listening devices that you use, like MP ect. I hope that my post was not misleading to you, and if you have any more questions/concerns please contact me via email. I would love to explain anything that I didn’t make clear. Again thanks so much for coming by my blog, I really appreciate it a lot. Have a wonder Holiday. jj
