Making Money on the Internet During Hard Times

Posted Thursday, May 19, 2011 by momscashblog | 20 Comments so far
It’s that time of year where many households are getting ready to do some  spring cleaning.  Purging closets and putting away items that you may not be using or even want anymore. Some people may be thinking of having the perennial “lawn sale/tag sale” to rid their homes/lives of clutter & bring in some extra money. Reading articles lately about down sizing, simplifying our lives and our homes, makes this a perfect time to get rid of clutter and make money from your home or make money online.

With the economic changes, I think it’s safe to say all of usFotolia 747996 XS 300x226 Making Money on the Internet During Hard Times are feeling the squeeze one way or another. Gas prices are at an all time high, lay offs, downsizing in the work place, and food prices keep on rising.  It isn’t any wonder that people are looking for ways to make extra money, on & off the Internet now more than ever. There are a multitude of ways to make money online, many  that we all know about, even some I’m sure that haven’t been thought of yet.

eBay was one of the earlier ways of making money on the Internet.  It was a great opportunity for stay at home moms, entrepreneurial moms/ dads, anyone who had something they wanted to  buy or sell. eBay was the  place to sell that item & make money from the Web.
There were many people who made  good money when this dot com first surfaced and are still making money by setting up their own stores on eBay. Where else will you find people from around the world  looking at your items that you have up for sale or auction?
eBay was  the largest retail site on the Web, although now Amazon and several other websites participate in auctions and merchandising. However eBay has always been the go to site for selling and buying anything that one could imagine.  Potential for anyone to make money from your home is just a few steps away. Go over to eBay.com and get yourself familiar with the site,  there is some tax & registration information that will need to be done (if you want to start selling as a business) but nothing you can’t handle. You are then on your way to making money on the Internet.

Do you know or care what Kim Kardashian’s first job was when she was younger and long before we all heard or had seen anything of her or her sex tape?  Say what you will about her but, she had the initiative to clean out her clothes closet set up an account with eBay and  started selling her clothes.  It’s said that some of her Hollywood friends then enlisted her to help them organize and sell their clothes that were no longer needed.  She now has several brick ‘n’ mortar stores in the U.S. which are surely making money, yet she’s still selling clothes on eBay!?  One must admit the family has some entrepreneurial blood flowing through those veins.

If you are spring cleaning, downsizing or looking for a way to make some money remember that eBay is a great source  to sell some of your items that you may not otherwise  think about getting money for. Times are hard and some families  are collecting coupons just to save money for groceries. Even pets are being brought into shelters or in some communities being left on the side of the road, due to the expense of feeding the family pets. These are hard times!

Making money on the Internet during these hard times, can give some families a new outlook on an other wise bleak time.
If you have been selling or buying with eBay, or making money on the Internet we would love to hear any comments good or otherwise on what your experience has been. You have a business with eBay or another auction/selling site, let us know how you are doing with it and what items are hot right now.

Funny you should write a post about selling items on eBay. It was one of the first things I tried with regards to making a little extra money. Just the other day I was going through stuff hiding in closets, most of which I don’t use and after being away from eBay for a while, I listed them to try and earn a bit of money from them instead of throwing them out. Definitely a good way of getting organised and in my case, also refocusing on a few life goals.

Nobody talks about Ebay these days, but it obviously it is still profitable.

Hey Miked, I realize that eBay is not way up on the radar lately, as I said in the post. However I do know plenty of people are still using eBay and it’s worth trying to sell some items and see if you do make any money. If you shouldn’t have any luck with them then, there are plenty of new auctions/merchandising selling sites on the web now. I do think it’s still profitable, as I’m always on there looking for vintage home items to buy. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment. I’ve been over to your blog and really enjoyed it, also left a message. Thanks again, jj

Great ideas and suggestions. There are many different ways to make money online and ebay should not be left out of them. True it is not talked about much anymore but you can still get money for many of your discarded items online.

@an Entrepreneur: thanks for stopping by MCB and leaving a comment, it is very much appreciated. It sounds like you are very busy selling on eBay, doing reviews and classifieds. I wonder how you are doing with your eBay acct. , as I’ve heard just recently that sales are slowly on the rise. I hope you are doing well. To your success!

@BilliardsBoy: I visited your website/blog and the number of pool tables that are listed or rather the no. of manufacturers is amazing!!!! I had heard of a couple of the names but not the number you have on your site. I have to tell you I love the theme that you choose and the colors are fantastic!! Thanks so much for stopping at MCB and leaving a comment. I tried to leave a comment at your post regarding the Japanese Pool Champion but found no comment area. Thanks again, jj

Great article. I actually went through a downsize about 2 years ago and it felt better than anything. Sometimes you realize, hey you don’t use the stuff you gathered over the years and maybe someone else can. I am not the yard sale type so I basically gave it all away.
But bad economic times or not, it’s what we decide to do in it, so I don’t ever see it as bad times (it just has to cycle itself through) but whatever your view, we should ALWAYS be thinking about how we can minimize the impact of the bureacrats who make decisions for us and the best way to do that is to build your own business and online marketing and for me in particular mobile marketing is a gold mine. @bossylifemobile

This is an incredible article. Godin uses the power of connecting with people a way to create an income. The power of the Internet is the ability to connect with thousands. If you can use those connections to make money, you just created your own income producing system.

Thanks bossylife.com for the comment that you left. I’ll tell ya that I had never been a yard seller either, until I had a friend make over $500. in a weekend. Anything left over she haul off to Goodwill. You are totally right on when you say that, “bad economic times or not, it’s what we decide to do in it” or what we decide to do during those hard times that can change our lives forever. I’ve read so many stories about someone losing their job and then create a homegrown business, decide to go back to school, or change their whole career path and bang an entrepreneur is born! We have to think outside the box. Thanks again for stopping by, hope to see you again. jj

I have tried a little selling off of EBAY but haven’t had a lot of luck. And I have checked out Amazon but they kind of force you into underselling or selling below what you can afford to. And I have tried affiliate programs and had no luck. So what exactly am I doing wrong on EBAY.

Ok you don’t have to tell me about e-Bay…… I love it. I buy great stuff at great prices on e-Bay. But I have also sold everything from clothes to cameras on there as well. I like the auction facility because when people bid on your items it shows they’re genuinely interested to buy. That’s encouraging and exciting at the same time. Try e-Bay and make money from those things you no longer want.
