What is SEO?
The most basic definition of SEO (search engine optimization) would be; The use of various techniques to improve a web site’s ranking in the search engines and thus attract more visitors.

Here are 5 great tools you can use to help optimize your web site or blog. These tools will help you to see if your site is properly optimized, check your rankings, research your keywords and more. All of these tool are absolutely FREE!

1. Website Grader
This is one of my favorite tools and I use it frequently. This will give you a very detailed report on all SEO aspects of your site. Not only will you find out how well your site is optimized, but you’ll also get suggestions on how to make the necessary improvements.

This tool is very easy to use and all they require is your site URL and your email address. The email address is optional but you can have the detailed results mailed to you. If you desire, you can even enter a competing web site’s URL. Once the report is completed, (usually takes a couple of minutes) you’ll be presented with a report and a score. Give it a try at: Website Grader

2. Google Adwords Keyword Tool
You’ll be able to research your keywords with this tool. You can find out the average number of searches that are performed for any keywords or phrases. It will also recommend some alternative keywords and phrases.

When optimizing your site, you want to be certain that people are searching for your keywords. If nobody is searching for your keywords, you won’t get much traffic. This tool is very easy to use and you can find it here:Google Adwords Keyword Tool

3. Wordtracker
This is a great tool for researching keywords. With this tool, you are able to enter a keyword and get a list of related keywords and the number of daily searches.

Keep in mind that no keyword tool is perfect but using this tool along with the Google Adwords tool, will give you the best possible results. This tool is very easy to use so give it a try. You’ll find the the Wordtracker tool here: Wordtracker

4. Sitemap Generator
A sitemap contains links to all the pages on your site and this handy tool will generate a sitemap for you in either HTML or XML format. It is recommended that you have a sitemap so the search engines are able to find all the pages on your site.

This is another tool that’s simple to use. All you need to do is enter your site URL and click the start button. A sitemap will be generated and you can load it on your site. You can find this tool here: Sitemap Generator

5. Keyword Rank Checker
If you’re curious to know how your site is ranked by Google for a specific keyword or phrase, this tool will do the job. As you already know, most traffic comes from the first page of Google so it should always be your goal to try and get listed as high on the page as possible.

This tool will help you check your progress much faster than you could do it manually. To use this tool, all that is required is entering your site URL and the keywords you want to rank. You can also enter your competition’s URL and the rank checker will give you the position of your site in Google’s search as well as comparing it to your competitor’s. You can try it out here: Keyword Rank Checker

There are literally dozens of SEO tools available but I only listed 5 of what I feel are the best and most popular. I hope you find these useful for any of your online endeavors.

NOTE FROM JJ: This is a guest post that was written and submitted for me at momscashblog.com by my great blogging friend Robert Barry. I am sure you have all heard or read his blog http://successfulaffiliatemarketing.com. He answers and offers many new ideas regarding affiliate marketing. Visit this blog and YOU will be a successful affiliate marketer.

I want to thank Robert for this great guest post as I have been having a few medical problems, with either a pinched nerve in my neck/spine and have to stay off of the computer as much as I can. So I put out the SOS and Robert pulled through for me and I can’t thank him enough for this great guest post. Thanks so much friend!! jj

The big things to remember about SEO is your website has to be easy to read by a crawler, which is essentially a robot.

You want to make it as easy for the crawler as possible to find what your website is about.
For example, you should always include a link to your sitemap on the homepage. A sitemap is a collection of links to all the pages on your website. Don’t make your sitemap flash or silverlight, just ext, since crawlers can’t read flash or silverlight.
Having flash or silverlight is still okay, as long as you also have text links.

To help google image search find you, all your images should have alternate text (the text that shows when you move your cursor on it, or if the image doesn’t load)

Another thing: All links to other websites should be relevant. If you link to a website that’s completely different than your own, add the nofollow tag before doing so.

Google loves fresh content. Having a blog that you regularly update, and updating your general website content frequently helps you attain a high google ranking.

And lastly, make your pages easy to load. Speed is now taken into account by the crawler, and if your webpage takes an excessively long time to load, that can hurt your ranking.

Just remember when using the google keyword research tool that it shows data from across the content network in its numbers. So if it says there is 300,000 searches per month on keyword X the reality is that the actual figure is some 75% smaller.
