Question About RSS

Posted Monday, August 4, 2008 by momscashblog | 20 Comments so far

Hey guys, I need some tech help. When they had to transfer a chunk of MomsCashBlog’s data from one server to another in June, things went whacky in my WordPress settings. I knew something was wrong, but couldn’t put my finger on it. Then a few weeks ago I got a message from either RSS or Feedburner that said “You Could Be Toast”… (Whoooaaa!! That’s a little scary!) It prompted me to put all of my site’s info in because it said I was NOT signed up with them. I assumed I fixed everything with the “Toast” message but I just looked at my Incoming Links on the WordPress Dashboard and it says: Error: Could not find an RSS or Atom Feed at that url. Obviously there is still a problem.

The Question: How do I get my RSS or Atom Feed back?

I have a new laptop since I got that “You Could be Toast Message” and I can’t remember where it came from. Is there something I should be doing in WordPress or do I go to another site to sign up for it?

Now it makes sense that it’s the RSS that has been causing me problems. After investigating I found that RSS has to do with trackbacks and links and all kinds of things…. which I didn’t know! I thought RSS only had to do with the feeds we get when we sign up for someone’s RSS. (I told you I was not technical… Live and Learn! lol) When the data was transferred I got some e-mails and a comment about my RSS Feed giving people the whole 2 months worth of data that was transferred from one server to another, but that seemed to fix itself.  I signed up for my own RSS after the complaints and I did notice that there is no date on my posts.

I will reward whomever gives me the correct answer and can help me get my RSS or Atom feed back on track… (or whatever it is I need! lol.. I don’t really know what I need!)  Hope someone can help me! Thanks in advance.

JJ

Hi!

I just got your message on my blog, just want to say thanks for dropping by and help you out with the RSS problem.

I just checked your RSS feeds and it appears to be valid (both IE7 and Firefox) though is not using the Feedburner RSS, so you might want to correct that as well.

To fix the error for the RSS on your Dashboard, you need to do the following:

1. Click edit on the “Incoming Link” sectin
2. Enter the RSS URL which is:
http://blogsearch.google.com/blogsearch_feeds?hl=en&scoring=d&ie=utf-8&num=10&output=rss&partner=wordpress&q=link:http://momscashblog.com
3. Save the changes.

Just inform me if that fixes the problem.

P.S. Sent you another message using your contact page.

I really don’t understand what the problem is lol. I checked out the feed and it seems to be working fine.

Here is your RSS feed: http://momscashblog.com/feed/. In turn this is linked to your feedburner feed (feeds.feedburner.com/momscashblog). This is how it should be. You want to separate your feed from your blog in case you ever move blog. You just go to Feedburner and change the feed url to new server and you do not lose anything.

If you deleted your feedburner feed, then you wouls just uise your blog feed (momscashblog.com/feed/).

Here is some information on Feedburner Help Center.
http://www.google.com/support/feedburner/bin/topic.py?topic=13252
However, you have a readable, subscribably feed and you have email subscription, so you are okay.

If your subscribers are getting too many updates, set it up to send once a week, or every three days.

——————————

Also you had asked about the Linkback Project. The numbers only go to 100, so if you think you might be interested, go over to the LinkBackProject (www.linkbackproject.com/?p=181) and read that post. Do exactly as the post says. After you have the post on your blog and have pinged your blog, leave a message at the linkbackproject/?p=181 post. If you did not do it correctly, he will tell you.

It is not a contest, it is an experiment in link building. If you want links, get in on the first 100. All you need is one key word to use this round. Eventually you will need 5 key words total. Just pick ones that send traffic your way (check your stats).

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. If followed you back here.

Lloyd Lopez, and CyberCelt THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!! You guys are going to save my blog from being “toast”! lol… Lloyd, I put that url in and it worked!!! that fixed the Incoming Links problem!! It’s back to normal now… I had no incoming links at all for a while there and everything changed on the dashboard.. Thanks… Now I will try to fix the other problems with the info you guys gave me…

CyberCelt… I think that is the url I should have put in on the Toast message but I did not put it in (I just used MomsCashBlog)… as I said, that laptop broke so I can’t remember where I was… do I go to Feedburner to put my correct url in somewhere? I don’t understand!!??

btw, both of your comments were stuck in moderation all night because you had urls in them… (it’s the best SPAM I’ve ever gotten! lol) I will contact you both and thank you properly!!!

Got your message on my blog and I know why you’re not getting anymore links. Google considers you a SPLOG or Spam blog with zero content. Google has dumped you out of it’s index. Thus goes google thus goes Feedburner.

You are toast. I’d drop the domain, find a new host, with new IP address and try again.

Eric, now you’re scaring me, but it makes sense. Because that chunk of posts was missing for many hours while they transferred the data and where I lost some posts, it thinks I’m not a legitimate blog. I found that my Google Site Map was disconnected in the process too which doesn’t sound good. The PageRank really dropped and now I see why.

Thanks sooo much, I will call my host and see what can be done. I may need your help later. I’ll contact you.

Eric… I’m getting a bunch of incoming links since I put in the url that Lloyd gave me, could that have fixed the situation? Or am I still toast?

Of all times I have a couple of doctor’s appointments today that I HAVE to go to. (I’m sure my blood pressure will be pretty high. lol) I hope you guys can help me when I get back and I am grateful for the help you’ve all given me so far. I knew the transfer caused problems but could not figure out what it was on my own. PLEASE stay in touch!

JJ……Disregard Eric’s comment. That was a scare tactic made to make you worry. Enter: site:http://momscashblog.com into google

Robert, I think Eric is right. I am quite sure Google thinks I have no content because of the missing stuff from the transfer. I’ve gone to that link before for MCB and it shows all of the posts. Put John Chow in and you’ll see all of his comes up… Once I find out what this all means I will have to make a post so it never happens to anyone else! (Of course most people don’t buy a blog and then later have to transfer a chunk of the blog like I did, but it could help others to know more about how Feed effects our blog and searches, ratings, etc.) JJ

Hi JJ

Thank you for your words of encouragement! They made me laugh! Then I went to your site and I wish I new what you were talking about with the RSS feeds.

I read of a few of the posts and it looks like you’ve got some pretty good resposnes. I don’t want to bore you with what I know about links but this is how I write them if I have access to the html code I type

So what you see above is what I typed into a post on my site(after I clicked the html tab) and you will see everything except the code. I have a feeling I’m not telling you anything you you don’t know. Blogging is new to me but now I’m determined to figure it out! As soon as I can I will buy a regular dot com address so I can use the same version you are! Please don’t be toast! and what a rude thing for a computer to say! :)

Hi JJ,

Glad it’s fixed. I calmed down and read more of the posts and you’re all set. I tried to send you instructions but they turned out to be functioning code instead of text. I’m sure it’s a simple code that would let it act like regular text but I don’t remember what it is! I realy thought it would show up on your end as instructions and not a link. Sorry! Sooo happy your o.k. That alone makes today a good day!!!!

Hi Jj,

I’m glad it fixed the problem.

And Robert is right. Your blog is not a Splog.

And regarding the Google Sitemap, I suggest getting the Google Sitemap wordpress plugin – for your sitemap needs. :)

BTW, I already sent you an email. Just contact me if you have some concerns or questions.

Lloyd… got your reply to my e-mail.. (I have a feeling we’re in different time zones.) Thank you sooo much for the great info/instructions and I will get one back to you soon. :)

Robert… Thanks! :) I took your warning and didn’t do anything impulsive.

Jackie… I agree, how dare Feedburner give me a message saying I could be “toast”! (it’s very rude. lol) With Lloyd Lopez’s help I’ll get this taken care of and all will be fine, I’m sure. :)

JJ, yes I’ve visited you from time to time, and it looks like your still doing great! Glad to hear that you got your RSS issue resolved, and thanks for sharing your earnings with us! As for myself, I basically have given up on my blog. At first, I just slowed down on the post frequency due to summer, but then I decided that with the amount of time I was investing in the blog, that the end just didn’t justify the means. Keep up the good work and I wish you great success with your blog!

Anthony, Oh, I hope you come back to your blog some time. You have sooo much to offer the world with your knowledge. Just say you’ve stopped to write an e-book or something and come back after summer! lol Maybe post every three or 4 days… (it works for me.) Your Affiliate Marketing program has great info. I think you should keep it on the side as a feature and market it. Whatever you do, I wish you great luck and success… but you’ve come this far and you were an inspiration to me. You have so much knowledge about blogs, etc. that I think you should come back and get in the game again. Think of it as a hobby and don’t put as much time into it. Great wishes for you always! :) jj
