Is Your Comment Area Easy To Navigate?

Posted Wednesday, January 20, 2010 by momscashblog | 54 Comments so far

Lately I’ve been having some problems with leaving comments on certain blogs that I was visiting. It made me wonder if I was the  only one that was running into these problems and if it bothered anyone else? I wondered if I was just being too anal  about leaving comments?  Ever since I first started blogging I’ve always been big into commenting, I really like the interaction that a comment allows between the blogger and the reader. I know we all read a lot of blogs everyday or at least try to and I for one always try to leave a comment after reading ones post. Then I started to hit roadblocks now and then on certain blogs, where I was unable to find their comment area or the owner of the blog had you jumping through hoops just to leave a comment on their blog.

“Make sure your site is easy to navigate. Nothing is more frustrating than navigating a site where it’s easy to get lost. This will negatively impact your profitability since potential customers are unlikely to stick around if it’s too difficult to find what they want. Simple and direct navigation is key!” from webreference.com/authoring.

Do You Make Your Readers Jump Through Hoops?

I think some blog owners are unaware that their comment areas are too involve for some bloggers to take the time to either register or sign in to leave a comment. There are some blogs that I’ve noticed that are so cluttered that after you read the post you expect to see the comment area and your unable to find it, you try putting your cursor everywhere to see if you can find the exact spot where you are suppose to leave your comment. If I can’t find the comment area within so many seconds then I’m on my way to another blog, or on to another project that I have to do online. We are all pressed for time lately (what with work and some of us working more than one job) that sometimes it seems  we spend far too much time online and we just can’t wait to get off-line and put the computer away for another day.  Time is precious to a lot of us whether we work at the office for 8-10 hours a day and some of us come home only to go online and put in another maybe 4-5 hours on the computer. It wears on all of us after awhile and we should make it easier on our visitors  that come to our blogs to read a post and leave a comment on our blog. Also keep in mind that some of the people that come to our blogs are new to blogging and may not know much about leaving a comment, so make it easy on the new reader to leave a comment. After all it’s to our benefit to grab those new readers when we can.

I had read a statement that the Pro-blogger Darren Rowse had written awhile back it was in regards to:  Make it Easy to Comment - I leave a lot of comments on a lot of blogs each week – but there is one situation where I rarely leave a comment – even if the post deserves it – blogs that require me to login before making a comment. Maybe I’m lazy (actually there’s no maybe about it) or maybe there’s something inside me that worries about giving out my personal details – but when I see a comments section that requires registration I almost always (95% or more of the time) leave the blog without leaving the comment that I want to make. While I totally understand the temptation to require registration for comments (combatting spam in most cases) something inside me resists participating in such comments sections. Registration is a hurdle you put in front of your readers that some will be willing to leap but that others will balk at (the same is often said about other comments section requirements that go beyond the basics). Keep your comments section as simple and as easy to use as possible”

Is your blog comment area set up so it’s easy on your readers to leave a comment?  If you’re at a blog where you have to register or sign up to comment will you follow through to leave a comment, and if not care to tell  why you wouldn’t leave a comment?

I’ve been thinking to make it even more simple by putting the comment box right under my blog posts, because now, a visitor must click a link to open the comment box and leave a feedback.

Anyway, I know how annoying all those captchas and registration processes can be, so I let anyone comment, and of course, I manually approve the comments, because it’s the best way to ensure publishing non-spam comments.

Hey Davor, That’s an interesting idea by putting the comment box right after the post then the reader doesn’t have to click to open the comment box! You are right the registration processes are annoying and I think some blog owners also get annoyed with the spam that they get without these processes but like you mentioned most can just manually approve comments. I want to thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment, I just went to your blog and enjoyed your latest post. Have a great day!

Hi,

I guess commenting is something a lot of people do not mentally prepare to do after a working day’s stress.

See commenting as a form of investment you have to make for your blog’s sake. Maybe tat would help.

And then how about selecting a handful of blogs to comment on during the week and many more on weekends?

BTW, thanks for your comment to my post on MyBlog2day. :)

I only make a blog comment for a blog requiring registration if the topic is ready that interests me like a well researched study or some good tutorials. It is really a hassle in the reader’s part to register before you can post your opinion. Captcha is good, as long as it is easily decipherable, unlike Myspace’s, lol!

Keep it up, Moms Cash Blog!

Hey Olusegun,Thanks so much for stopping by and thanks for your comment. I must agree that commenting is like a form of investment (never thought of it that way,but like the idea) it does take time to stop and put some effort into writing a comment, but as a blog owner we do depend on our comments. Knowing that someone out there is hearing what we have to say, and care enough to make a comment. BTW I think your idea about picking so many blogs for the wk and then more for the wk.end sounds like a good idea. Thanks again for stopping by!! jj

Thanks Stephen I realize it does take time to leave a comment and that some people only leave a comment if it’s like you said something that interest them. I find that just about every post has some bit of new info or something new that contributes to the blogging world or the make money online segment. thanks so much for visiting my blog.

Comment is one of the most important elements of any blog post.
After reading this post, I straight go back to my blog to make sure my comment area is easy for my readers to leave their comments. :-)

Hi jj,

No problem leaving a comment here:-) Great post and I wholeheartedly agree with all you said. I used to have a captcha form in the comment area but I eliminated it because I felt it was an inconvenience to my readers. Akismet does a fine job of picking out the spammers and that’s all I need.

There are a few great blogs that I visit where I’d love to leave a comment but I refuse to jump through hoops to do it. Comments are an integral part of blogging and I don’t understand why any blogger feels they need to complicate the process.

@Alvin I agree comments are important to our blogs btw I’ve been to your blog (great blog w/great posts) and your comment area is A ok, No worries there!! Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and thank you for your comment it is greatly appreciated.

Hi Robert, No you’re right,no problem leaving a comment here with all the other problems I’ve been having with tech stuff at least that does work.lol I’ve found that some captcha’s don’t bother me, unless it takes me more than 3 times then I’m out of there. Akismet certainly does a great job getting the spammers and it’s not like I have a bunch of people spamming me that I can’t take care of them. All one has to do is hit the d-e-l-e-t-e button & it’s over. Thanks Robert for stopping by my blog greatly appreciated and always delighted to read your educated and well informed comments.

My biggest problem are the blogs with the 10 digit Captcha forms with images so skewed that you can barely read them. I understand the need to filter out the spammers, but it doesn’t need to be that involved to post valid comments…

The comment area has to be easily accessable so any readers can post a comment without messing about and taking that long that they have forgotten what they were going to post.

I agree, putting roadblocks into the commenting process definitely discourages many people from leaving a comment. However, I think that in some cases website owners do this on purpose in order to develop a small but close community of regular readers/participants. If you have to register to leave a comment, you probably won’t do it unless you have something meaningful to say and want to be part of the community on that website.

Great Point I need to do some re-evaluations on my sites as well when it comes to “making easy to leave comments.” I also need to rededicate myself to the blogging community. I’ve kinda lost the flare of doing a post a day and meeting/commenting on other bloggers blog post. :-)

Hi Mom! Taking a trip here from BC (thanks for returning my shout) only to find you discussing one of my favorite subjects… commenting!

While I do not comment on every single blog I land on, I do make it a point to put my two cents in on things that really strike/peak my interest (as you can see).

I think part of the “problem” is that the average website (not blogger) owner isn’t aware of how powerful commenting can be for him or her.

The other reason is that with all sorts of different styles of themes, some Comment links are really hard to locate.

I do know of some, though they don’t come readily to mine, (oh wait, there is one in the CommentExchange) that for the life of me I see absolutely no place TO comment.

Ah well… you give it a go and hope for the best :)

Hope to “see” you soon!

@ moving companies detroit; thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment & especially for your input of the comment area. You give a whole different perspective on the subject that I really never considered i.e., maybe some website owners do this on purpose in order to keep a small close readership. I do agree that one probably wouldn’t register if required unless they have something meaningful to say. Thanks again for your comment and your perspective.

Hi Diane, Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your oh so “right on” comment. I must agree with you that commenting is one of my favorite subjects also. I love reading posts and leaving comments and I usually do leave one on just about every blog that I visit… there might be a few that I have passed by for whatever reason.

I also agree that a comment can be a very powerful tool and useful to the owner of the website, it gives feedback & let’s us know that what we are writing is being read whether one agrees or disagrees with the post. There is ONE blog a well read and “very well rated blog” that has so many ads (that does not bother me) that are blinking around the area where you think the comment should go but there is no place where your cursor will activate & no matter how hard I’ve tried it is impossible to find a place to leave a comment.

Thanks again for stopping by & leaving a comment, hope to see you here again.

Hi Ezekiel, I’ve missed you around the blogging community, but I know you have other great things going on in your life. Like a jazz cd that is out on the market one that you have written &, played and I’m assuming produced. I’ve heard one cut off of the cd and hearing that ‘ONE’ (with piano) I can imagine that the rest of the cd is excellent! I’ve got to get all info. together so that I can purchase the whole cd and would love to do a review on my blog for you, I want others to hear & feel the music that you have produced so that they will know what you are made of … soul!

You mentioned that you’ve kinda lost your flare for daily posting & to that I will tell you that I myself do not post daily it is just too much work to commit to something like that. Thanks for taking the time to stop by the blog and will stop by Twitter. Thanks again.

Let me know what I’m doing wrong or if maybe you have something mixed up. Hi Kennedy, I’m not sure if I agree with you on this one. I think people mainly come to our blogs to read our comments, but I don’t think that mainly people come to leave a comment. I’m afraid that there are too many people out there who just read our post and don’t bother to leave a comment. I know I leave a comment every time I read someone’s post, the only time I don’t leave one is if their comment area is too hard to find, or if they make you sign in with passwords and all of that. That takes too much of my precious time to find my book of passwords and then go back and leave a comment. You are right the comment area, must be good and easy to navigate & most important easy to find. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment I really appreciate it. Have a great weekend. jj
